The Council of Ministers decided on Friday to appoint an investigating officer to investigate the committing of disciplinary offences by four-high ranking officials of the Foreign Ministry in relation to the handling of documents that have to do with the Mari investigation.
After the end of the meeting, Government Spokesman, Stephanos Stephanou announced the appointment of Mr. Antonis Vassiliades.
Mr. Vassiliades will examine whether Nicos Emilianos – General Manager of the Foreign Ministry, Michalis Stavrinos – proxy Minister, Giorgos Yiangou – Office Manager of the Foreign Ministry general Manager and Ioulia Sikopetriti – diplomatic attache have committed disciplinary offences.
On the question whether the four officials will be suspended, Mr. Stephanou said that this is not an issue of the Council of Ministers but of the Foreign Minister, who will consult with the Public Service Commission.
According to the Government Spokesman, the proposal submitted by Mrs. Erato Kozakou Marcoulli is based on a legal advice given by the Attorney General of the Republic.
Besides, the Council of Ministers has not decided on the appointment of the new deputy commander of the National Guard yet.
