In response to the latest arrival of a boat carrying migrants in Cyprus on Wednesday morning, Minister of Interior, Constantinos Ioannou, pointed out the need of establishing a border monitoring mechanism in Lebanon and reassessing the situation in Syria by the European Union.

"The arrival of a boat this morning, carrying 60 Syrian migrants, including men, women, and children, some of whom were in poor condition and were transported to the hospital for care, unfortunately serves as proof of the dangers human lives face in unsuitable boats, often victims of trafficking networks," Ioannou said in a written statement.

He added that for this very reason, during the recent visit of the European Commissioner for Internal Affairs, he urgently raised the need for the EU to take action. This includes the establishment of a Europol monitoring mechanism in collaboration with Lebanese authorities and Cyprus Police's Immigration and Asylum Service in border surveillance in Lebanon.

In the same context, the Minister noted that Cyprus is initiating a proposal for the European Union to reassess the situation in Syria for immigration purposes, based on the actual conditions prevailing in the country.

He further said that he will bring up the issue at the informal meeting of EU Interior Ministers in Brussels on Thursday.

"Migration is a complex problem with a humanitarian dimension. Every human life is precious, and we are obligated to protect it," the Minister concluded.

The Minister travels to Brussels on Wednesday to participate in the informal meeting of EU Ministers of Interior.
