According to the latest report by the statistical service based on data held by regional labour offices, the number of registered unemployed persons as at the end of January 2002 rose by 1.995 compared to December 2001, reaching 13.360 persons or 4.2% of the total number of economically active persons. The increase was noted mainly in the hotel and leisure sectors, public administration and manufacturing.
An increase of 1.453 persons or 12.2% was recorded compared to January 2001, again mainly in the hotel and leisure sector.
From the total of 13.360 registered unemployed for January 2002, 7.054 were women, an increase compared to 6.065 women unemployed in January 2001. For January 2002, the majority, 4.362 were from the Larnaca/Famagusta region, followed very closely by the Nicosia region, then Limassol and finally the Paphos region.
In January 2002, out of the total unemployment figure, 1.396 persons were unemployed for up to 15 days, 7.515 between 15 days to 3 months, 2.205 between 3 to 6 months, 1.571 between 6 months to a year and 673 for over one year. Further, from the total for January 2002, 44 unemployed persons were without any education, 3.503 had basic education, 6.275 had basic secondary education, 1.402 had secondary technical training and 2.136 had higher-level education.
The majority of unemployed for January 2002 were listed as cleaners, messengers and untrained workers totaling 3.777, followed by services and sales workers totaling 2.661.
