According to the statistics on tourism and travel released by the Statistical Service, May 2001 features an increase of the order of 11,4% in the number of tourist arrivals, in comparison to May 2000, with 333.563 tourist arrivals this May from 299.355 last May. An 8,3% rise has been recorded in the numbers of tourist arrivals so far this year (January-May 2001), reaching 874.768 from 807.424 last year.
Up to 85,3% of the tourists originated from European Union member countries. The United Kingdom accounted for 58% of the arrivals, followed by Germany with 7.9%, Sweden with 4,9%, Russia with 3,7%, Greece with 3,5%, Switzerland with 2.5% and Norway with 2,5%.
The average age of tourists arriving in Cyprus in the month in question was 41 years, of which 47,5% were male and 52,5% were female.
Considering all categories of travelers (including excursionists), May 2001 features an increase of the order of 5,3% in the number of arrivals compared to May 2000. Travelers reached 391.729 for the month in question. Departures reached 358.549, up 2,9% from last May. A 6% rise has been recorded in the numbers of arrivals so far this year (January-May 2001), reaching 1.133.688 over 1.070.021 last year.
Up to 91,4% of the travelers (excluding excursionists) originated from European countries, while 79,5% came from European Union member countries. From the 94,2% of the travelers that arrived by air, 60,1% arrived in charter flights.
May 2001 saw an 18,75% increase in residents returning from trips abroad, reaching 48.725 from 41.036 last May, while January-May 2001 figures are 0,7% ahead of last year, with the number of residents returning to Cyprus thus far this year reaching 199.470.
Greece was the destination for the 32,4% of Cypriots traveling abroad, followed by the United Kingdom with 11,8%, Russia 7,8%, Lebanon 5,8%, and Egypt 4.2%; 56% stated that they were traveling for holidays and 37,9% for business.
