According to the latest date published by the Statistical Service, in April 2001 the number of arrivals covering all categories of travellers (including excursionists) reached 314.844 recording an increase of 11,1% compared to the corresponding month last year. For the period January-April 2001 arrivals of travellers reached 741.959 compared to 697.934 in the corresponding period of 2000, recording an increase of 6,3%.
Arrivals of tourists reached 247.790 in April 2001 compared to 221.785 in the corresponding month last year, recording an increase of 11,7%. For the period January-April 2001 arrivals of tourists reached 541.204 compared to 508.068 in the corresponding period of 2000, i.e. an increase of 6,5%.
The main countries of tourist arrivals in April 2001 were the United Kingdom with 45,5%, Germany with 10,1%, Greece with 7,5%, Sweden with 5,0%, Russia with 4,6%, Switzerland with 3,5%, Finland with 2,2% and Netherlands with 2,0%. The overwhelming majority, 82,1% of tourist arrivals was from countries of the European Union.
In April 2001, 47.366 residents of Cyprus returned from a trip abroad compared to 42.009 in the corresponding month last year. For the period January-April 2001, 158.434 residents returned from a trip abroad compared to 149.285 in the corresponding period last year recording an increase of 6,1%.
In April 2001 the number of same-day visitors reached 16.831 of which 1.548 were same-day tourists and 15.283 excursionists. Long-term immigrants numbered 1.119 and short-term immigrants 1.358.
