According to the statistics on tourism and travel released by the Statistical Service, June 2001 features a 6,9% increase in the number of tourist arrivals in comparison to June 2000, with 322.835 tourist arrivals this June from 302.011 last June. For the first half of the year an 8% rise has been recorded in the numbers of tourist arrivals, reaching 1.197.604 from 1.109.435 last year.
Up to 82,1% of the tourists originated from European Union member countries. The United Kingdom accounted for 57,1% of the arrivals, followed by Sweden with 6%, Germany with 5,8%, Russia with 4,8%, Norway with 2,9%, Switzerland with 2,7% and Greece with 2,3%.
The average age of tourists arriving in Cyprus in the month in question was 37,8 years, of which 44,6% were male and 55,4% were female.
Compared to June 2000, June 2001 features an increase of the order of 8,8% in the number of arrivals of all categories of travelers (including excursionists). Travelers reached 413.278 for the month in question while departures reached 408.224, up 8,9% from last June. A 6,7% rise has been recorded in the numbers of arrivals for the first half-year, reaching 1.546.966 over 1.449.721 last year.
Greece was the destination for the 39,5% of Cypriots traveling abroad in June, followed by the United Kingdom with 10,8%, Russia 8,9%, Lebanon 5,7%, and the United States with 2,8%; 51,8% stated that they were traveling for holidays and 24,1% for business.
