In total, 7,280 candidates have expressed interest in 3,227 positions, according to the data provided on Tuesday by the Chief Returning Officer, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior, Dr Elikkos Elia, on the occasion of the completion of the nomination process for the June 9, 2024 elections. The number of people eligible to vote in the upcoming elections amounts to 706,534.

According to Elia, there are in total, 7,280 candidates for 3,227 positions for the European Parliament as well as local government elections, and more specifically, the Presidents of the District Organisations of Local Government (EOA), Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Municipal Councillors, Members of School Boards, Presidents of Community Councils and members of Community Councils.
The total number of eligible voters in the June 9 election stands at 706,534, he said.
In particular, 568,608 Cypriot voters are registered in the permanent electoral roll, which gives the right to participate in all national elections, including 837 Turkish Cypriots, holders of an ID card of the Republic of Cyprus, with an address in the government-controlled areas.
In addition, 21,640 voters are included in the Special electoral roll of European Citizens for the Local Government Elections, and 13,017 voters in the Special electoral roll of European Citizens for the European Parliament Elections.
The Special Electoral Roll for the European elections includes 103,269 Turkish Cypriots, holders of Republic of Cyprus IDs, who live in areas where the Government of the Republic does not exercise effective control.
Additionally, he said, 4,691 voters have submitted a declaration to vote for the election of members of the European Parliament in 17 polling stations in Greece (Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Komotini, Volos, Heraklion, Ioannina), United Kingdom (London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow), and Brussels.
Elia said that the total number of posts amounts to 3,227 and concerns six members of the European Parliament, five Presidents of the District Organisations of Local Government, 17 Mayors of free Municipalities, three for semi-occupied and nine for occupied municipalities, 285 community leaders for free Communities and 138 for occupied Communities, 1,464 members of Community Councils of free Communities and 552 members for occupied Communities.
He clarified that all the ballot papers received by each voter will be cast into the same ballot box. Ballot papers will be different colours, depending on the type of election. For the European elections it will be blue, for the Presidents of the EOA, purple, for the Mayors, yellow, for the Deputy Mayors, brown, for the Municipal Councillors, white, for the Members of School Boards, green, for the Community Leaders, orange and for Community Councillors, grey.
According to Dr Elia, from May 1, 2024, the electronic service "Ti Psifizo” (What I Vote for) will be available through the website elections.gov.cy. Through the service, citizens will be able to learn about which elections they have the right to vote, as well as the number of preference crosses in each of them. The service will be available in Greek, Turkish and English.
On May 10, 2024, the “Where Do I Vote” service is to operate, in Greek, Turkish and English, through which voters can learn which polling station they have to go to cast their vote.
