The Republic of Cyprus is in advanced consultations for the formation of a joint company with the United Arab Emirates to participate in the share capital of the electricity interconnector (Great Sea Interconnector - GSI), while interest is also being expressed by America and Qatar, President Nikos Christodoulides, said in a television interview with OPEN Beyond Greece, which was broadcast on Saturday morning.
President Christodoulides discussed, among other things, the Cyprus-Greece electricity interconnection, current geopolitical developments and his relations with the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Speaking about the electricity interconnection, President Christodoulides said that there is interest from the Republic of Cyprus to participate in the share capital, saying that this is a decision that will be taken soon as some data are expected for a full assessment of the situation.
The President of the Republic pointed out the importance of the contracts of the electricity interconnection project stating that part of the project has not yet been signed and the first drafts are awaited. He pointed out that the contracts are directly intertwined with the costs, noting that "we cannot afford under any circumstances to take a decision that will pass on costs to the consumer."
At the same time, President Christodoulides said that the Republic of Cyprus is currently in advanced consultations for the establishment of a joint company between the Republic of Cyprus and the United Arab Emirates, as he said that there is interest from the United Arab Emirates to participate in the share capital of the electricity interconnection. "Similar interest has been communicated to us by the US government and also by Qatar," he added.
Asked about Germany's change of policy on migration and what he foresees, President Christodoulides replied that the status of Syria should be reconsidered, saying that "we are currently seeing this change of approach on the part of Germany, and I think this will lead us to a discussion in the EU."
Asked whether Greece and Cyprus could realistically return with benefits from the UN Summit in New York, he said that "we are trying, there is a will on the part of Athens, to use this improved climate in Greek-Turkish relations to convey messages to the Turkish President."
Asked about his relations with the Greek Prime Minister, President Christodoulides said that from the first day of his assumption of office there has been "absolute sincerity" with the Greek Prime Minister, noting that "yes, there are issues where we have different approaches, but through dialogue we always find common ground".
