According to a survey carried out by the Economics Research Centre of the University of Cyprus in cooperation with the CTO on “how satisfactory the Cyprus tourist product is” in February-December 2005, the degree of satisfaction of the tourists that visited the island is not the same.

90% of the tourists declared a high degree of satisfaction for the stay and the hotels, 75% a high degree of satisfaction for the environment and only 57% declared a high degree of satisfaction for the protection of the natural environment. On top of that, only 56% of the respondents stated a high degree of satisfaction for the environment that has been built.

How competitive Cyprus is?

The survey shows that the Cyprus tourist product concentrates high rates of satisfaction. More than 90% declared a high degree of satisfaction for the “general experience” they enjoyed in Cyprus, 80% said that the possibility to visit Cyprus again in the future is high and only 30% said that they are fully satisfied with their visit in the island.

The question that has been raised among the analysts is whether the above data show that the Cyprus tourist product “lags behind compared to other tourist destinations or whether the island’s tourist product seems to satisfy the tourists”.

To answer to the questions above, the analysts tried to compare the Cyprus tourist product with that of other countries. The results showed that the island’s tourist product is lacking in value for money. Specifically, 3 of 10 tourists declared that Cyprus offers a tourist product in lower value for money than the countries they visited recently, while only 5% believes that the Cyprus tourist product is of better value than the tourist products of other countries. 38% of the respondents said that Cyprus was better than expected, 60% said that it the same and only 2% said that it was worse.

Prospects

According to the analysts, it is necessary to “know the reasons behind the favourable or unfavourable tourists’ evaluations”, which must be assessed based on the socio-economic and vital characteristics of the travelers, the country of origin etc.

The survey was presented at a press conference held in Nicosia today, in the presence of the CTO Chairman, Fotis Fotiou, who stated that Cyprus is evaluated positively by the foreign visitors. “They say that they are satisfied by the quality of our tourist product and they express their intention to come back for holidays”, he said.

Referring to the CTO strategic plan for tourism, Mr. Fotiou said that this aims to put Cyprus in the world tourist map again as a quality destination that offers opportunities for multidimensional experience.
