Members of the House Commerce Committee criticized strongly once again the Electricity Authority of Cyprus for the inflated bills.

After Eurostat’s data showing that electricity prices in Cyprus burn the households and businesses, they urged EAC to cut its prices.

The Committee will discuss the issue at an extraordinary meeting and will urge the Board of the Authority to reduce electricity prices

Chairman of the Committee and DISY MP Lefteris Christoforou said that Eurostat data was catapult for Cyprus. “While the country is tested, Cyprus ranks first in high electricity prices”, he added.

“The price is 50% higher than the EU average”, he noted.

AKEL MP, Costas Costas said EAC’s move to cut prices by 13% was positive, however, there is a need for further reduction without jeopardizing its viability.

On behalf of the Democratic Party, MP Angelos Votsis said that despite the cuts, prices are far from the EU average.

EDEK MP Giorgos Varnavas, said that it is the duty of the Authority to cut prices and urged EAC to stop cutting off electricity to vulnerable groups of population.

He called on EAC to find ways to reduce the cost of producing energy.

EAC spokesman, Costas Gavrielides argued that power at a lower cost is possible because production is done with oil.

He said they cannot ask for price cuts in electricity at the same time that the state failed to find alternative ways of generating electricity.

In relation to the criticism on cutting off electricity to vulnerable groups, Mr. Gavrielides suggested that EAC is making payment facilities to customers, while its social policy is determined by the state.
