The performance of the Larnaca Airport in the delayed departures and arrivals in 2007 is negative. According to the Association of European Airlines (AEA), the Larnaca Airport had the worst performance among the 27 European airports in the delayed arrivals and the 8th in the delayed departures.
The latest figures boost criticisms against Hermes Airports for the unjustified price hikes of €14 on the airport duties and strengthen the effort on behalf of certain MPs to convince the state to contribute to the reduction of the duties via the drop in the revenues that its enjoys every year for letting Hermes being in charge. According to the relevant agreement, the state revenues that reached €40 million in 2007 are 30% of the gross income of the joint venture.
The Parliament’s effort to restrict the duties will take shape in the next few weeks, since Hermes’ charges and quality of services will be discussed by the House Commerce Committee.
Arrivals
According to AEA, the Larnaca Airport suffered the worst performance in delayed arrivals. 36.6% of the arrivals suffered a more than 15-minute delay and the average delay rate for these flights was 50.7 minutes.
The performance of Larnaca Airport exceeded even that of Heathrow, which is criticised strongly by the British media for its huge delays. The delayed arrivals at Heathrow reached 32.4% (37-minute delay), while the airport of Istanbul ranks third with 32.2% (41.1-minute delay).
What is interesting is that the delayed arrivals at the Larnaca Airport in 2005 stood at 22.3%. When the airport’s management passed to Hermes, the delayed arrivals increased to 30.1%.
Departures
The rate of delayed departures in 2007 stood at 26.1%, which is an average delay of 55 minutes against 24.3% or 50.9 minutes in 2006 and 19.6% or 54.1 minutes.
The rate of delayed departures from the Larnaca Airport in 2007 was higher than that of many other European airports, such as Frankfurt, Copenhagen, Paris, Manchester, Amsterdam, Zurich and Oslo.
Reasons
A Hermes representative was unavailable for comment. Today, he sent a memo on the reasons for the delays.
According to AEA, however, three fifth of the delays are attributable to reasons related to the airport management: the airport and air traffic control, the maintenance/equipment failure and the ground services. The remaining delays are linked to the delay in the arrival of the aircraft that will be used in the departure.
