The traffic jam in the entrance of the city of Nicosia will continue for the next 3 years since the construction of the ring road, which will cost €500 million, has not started yet.
For the time being, a solution that could minimize the problem is the triple measures adopted by the Transport Ministry, the Minister said during the House Transport Committee’s session.
In an effort to explain the measures that will be taken, Mr. Nicolaides said that there are no easy solutions since of the 700 thousand vehicles, 80 thousand enter the city while public transportation is used by 2% of the population only.
According to the Minister, the measures are:
- A third lane in Nicosia – Limassol highway of 800 meters. The works have been completed.
- A middle lane in Athalassa Avenue, for the vehicles going from Limassol Avenue to Strovolos exclusively.
- The conversion of Ellispontou Road into a one-lane road for the drivers heading north of Athalassa Avenue.
During the session, Mr. Nicolaides announced the strategic plans for the public transportation. “On September 1, 2009, the government will launch the new public means of transportation to the cities and the villages with 350 new buses. It is a 5-year plan that will be completed in 2014”, he noted.
Meanwhile, the government intends to take certain measures in the next few days to minimize the traffic jam in the capital, including the special itineraries, traffic adjustments, common use of vehicles, parking and use of buses.
As for the buses travelling to and from the Larnaca airport with low fare, Mr. Nicolaides said that 37 thousand travellers have been served so far.
The Ministry also intends to adopt bus lanes. “Three parking spaces are currently under review; one in Makarion Stadium, one in new GSP and one in Pavilio”, he said.
The members of the Committee, the Deputy Mayor of Nicosia, Stelios Ieronimides and Mayor of Strovolos, Savvas Iliofotou said that the delays are attributable to the promotion of the procedures and studies needed before starting the constructions.
