Great prospects for further strengthening of Cyprus-Egypt ties

The elected president of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides had a telephone conversation with the President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, on Thursday evening, according to a statement from his political office.

Christodoulides told Sisi that there are huge prospects for further strengthening Cyprus-Egypt relations and accepted an invitation to visit Egypt.

Sisi congratulated him  on his election and confirmed his strong political will to further strengthen bilateral relations. Egyptian President referred to the first intergovernmental conference in Cairo, in the presence of outgoing President Nicos Anastasiades and Christodoulides in his capacity as a Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Sisi noted that it is important to organize a new meeting soon and referred to the importance of the tripartite cooperation between Cyprus, Egypt and Greece.

During the telephone conversation, the Egyptian President also referred to the need to further strengthen bilateral relations, in areas such as trade, energy, tourism and defense.

He also thanked the Republic of Cyprus for its long-term contribution to the European Union in the direction of strengthening the relations between Egypt and the EU.

President-elect told Sisi that Egypt is a pillar of stability in the wider Middle East and thanked Cairo for its longstanding position and role in the Cyprus issue, both in the UN and in the Organization of the Islamic Conference .

Christodoulides said that he looks forward to the next intergovernmental meeting and the next tripartite meeting between Cyprus, Egypt and Greece.

He assured that the Republic of Cyprus will continue to highlight, within the European Union, the decisive role of Egypt in the wider region.
