Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today that the government is not negative towards any proposals on the Cyprus problem being submitted by the United Nations, but instead favours the greatest possible engagement of the UN in the process of direct talks to reach a settlement.

As the CNA reports, Papapetrou said "it is licit for the Greek Cypriot side to pursue and struggle and demand and request that these proposals to be submitted will be within the framework of UN decisions".

He added that this would also be in line with the recent statement issued by the UN Security Council, after being briefed by the UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, about the course of the UN-led talks between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.
