The possibility of building a railway network in Cyprus and prospects to co-fund the project were discussed for the first time on Monday with the European Commissioner for Transport, Adina Vălean, during her visit in Cyprus to attend the “Maritime Cyprus 2022” conference, Minister of Transport, Yiannis Karousos said.
He was addressing a joint press conference with Shipping Deputy Minister Vassilios
Karousos stated that they also discussed the possibility of co-funding a light railway that will connect Cyprus' cities with the airport, adding that relevant studies have been made.
Such a project is a way to deal with the traffic problem and the rising cost of transportation due to the gas price hike, the Minister said. He noted that according to the studies, the network can be incorporated into the existing highway network in Cyprus. He concluded that the government will strive to secure funding from any available EU funds.
