Chrystalla Georghadji has been appointed as new Central Bank Governor, replacing Panicos Demetriades who handed in his resignation yesterday.
According to an official announcement, the President of the Republic Mr Nicos Anastasiades has decided to appoint Mrs Chrystalla Georghadji, currently the Auditor General of the Republic, to the post of the Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus, effective 11 April, 2014.
With regard to this issue, the President of the Republic had this morning a telephone communication with the President of the European Central Bank, Mr. Mario Draghi, whom he informed about his decision.
Who is Chrystalla Georghadji
Chrystalla Georghadji was born in Famagusta on July 13, 1956 and graduated from the First High School of Famagusta in 1974.
She studied Economics at the University of Athens and did her postgraduate studies at the University of Southampton, England. She continued her studies at the University of Chicago in the U.S where she acquired her Master’s degree.
In 1981 she was appointed at the Ministry of Finance as a Finance Officer. In 1991 she was promoted to Chief Finance Officer in the same Ministry. In 1995 she was appointed as Assistant Superintendent of Insurance and until 1998 she headed the Insurance Companies Control Service.
From 1993 to 1998 she was Deputy Chairperson of the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission.
On 1 December 1998 she was appointed by the President of the Republic as Auditor General of the Republic.
In 2000 the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants of the United Kingdom elected her as an honorary member. This was the first time that a non-member of the Association was awarded with this distinction.
Mrs Georghadji has two children.
