The movement of the European tourists to and from the occupied territories of northern Cyprus will be free. The Council of Ministers decided on Wednesday to adopt the EU regulation concerning the movement of the European citizens, after reviewing the green line regime.

As a result, European tourists who wish to visit the occupied territories through the free areas and stay overnight to T/C hotels may do so freely, without any restrictions.

According to StockWatch sources, the Council of Ministers reviewed the possible repercussions on the Cyprus tourist industry from the free movement of European citizens, however the Republic of Cyprus is unable to take any measures that would clash the Community acquis.

Government Spokesman, Kypros Chrisostomides said that any Cypriot or EU citizen who will cross the green line having arrived in Cyprus from an illegal entry spot violates the law and the Republic will be able to impose administrative or other fines.

On the question whether tourists staying overnight in T/C hotels will be prosecuted, Mr. Chrisostomides said that the government is unable to do anything except to advise.

With regard to movement of goods, the Spokesman said that as from May 1, T/C goods will no longer be subject to import duties or VAT and will be treated as the EU products.

The movement of T/C industrial products will be allowed so long as their elaboration is sufficient.
