Farmers of the Larnaca Kokkinohoria area are staging a protest strike today against the government’s agricultural policy. Over 500 farmers with their trucks will gather at the Rizoelia roundabout in Larnaca and cut off access to the towns of Larnaca, Limassol and the Larnaca airport.
Protestors’ demands concern the writing off of agricultural debts, minimum prices for agricultural products, cheaper fuel, exemption from VAT for agricultural necessities, reduction of contributions to the Social Security fund for foreign workers. In addition objections have been raised on terms contained in the European Union proposals concerning local agriculture.
The farmers’ protest is supported by the organisations PEK, EKA, Agrotiki and Panagrotikos.
