Speaker of the House Demetris Christophias visited the site of the House yesterday to inspect the progress of renovation works currently underway. Mr. Christophias described the project as a "facelift for an ageing lady" and expressed his satisfaction with the progress. The building was originally built in 1955 by the British colonial administration and was used as a Press & Information Office. Upon the independence of Cyprus on the 16 August 1960, the building became the House of Parliament and also housed the Cabinet.
The House is undergoing a complete revamp which will be completed within 18 months at a cost of around CYP 2,8 million. The first out of six phases will be completed in time for the opening of the House in October. On completion, the House will have facilities as adequate as those planned for the new building, the construction of which has faced considerable delays.
