Cyprus will request from the European Commission a two-week extension with regard to transposing the EU directive on public procurement and concession into national law.

The letter requesting the extension has been drafted by the Law Office of the Republic, a meeting of the parliamentary Committee on Public Expenditure Control heard here today.

Cyprus received on 8 December 2016 a reasoned opinion by the Commission and had two months to notify Brussels about the transposition of the directive into national law. The deadline expires today.

However the bill is set to be approved tomorrow by the House plenary and will not apply until the bill is published in Cyprus' official gazette.

Although the bill was included in the plenary`s agenda on February 3, its approval was postponed and referred back to the Public Expenditure Control Committee.
