Only about 50% of respondents in Cyprus said they intend to vote in the upcoming June elections for the European Parliament, which is the lowest percentage among member states, significantly under the EU average (68%) as well as far from the largest percentage (Denmark, 86%), according to data included in the latest Eurobarometer published on Wednesday.
However, 67% of respondents in Cyprus said that they believe the country has benefited by entering the EU (72% in the EU), while 87% of Cypriots agrees that EU actions impact their daily lives (70% in the EU).
Regarding how citizens in the EU perceive the EU, 41% of respondents said they have a positive perception (45% in the EU), 33% responded they have a neutral perception (38% in the EU) and 25% (16% in the EU) said they have a negative perception.
Furthermore, responding to a question about their reasons for voting in the European elections, Cypriots gave as their most popular reasons the support of a political party (54% in Cyprus, 37% in the EU), the support to a specific candidate (52% in Cyprus, 23% in the EU) and because it is their duty as citizens (45% in Cyprus, 36% in the EU).
Responding to a question on which topics they would like the European Parliament to address, 50% of Cypriot respondents chose public health (34% in the EU), 43% chose the economy and the creation of new jobs (29% in the EU) and 42% selected the fight against poverty and social exclusion (36% in the EU).
The Parlemeter 2023 survey was carried out by the Verian (formerly Kantar Public) research agency between 25 September and 19 October 2023 in all 27 EU member states. The survey was conducted face-to-face, with video interviews (CAVI) used additionally in the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland and Malta. A total of 26.523 interviews were conducted. EU results were weighted according to the size of the population in each country.
In Cyprus, the survey took place from September 28th to October 15th 2023 with a sample of 504 persons, via face-to-face interviews.
