After visiting the Moni and Vassiliko power plants earlier today, AKEL General Secretary, Andros Kyprianou stated today that some try to panic the people for a possible blackout across Cyprus.
Mr. Kyprianou said that the whole situation will become better after August 5 and urged the public to be patient, while commenting on the scenarios for the collapse of the system at the old Moni plant, he said that there might be a failure – a new station may have one two – but a failure that could cause a blackout across Cyprus is a scenario goes beyond all reason and it is unacceptable because it is panicking people.
“Instead of projecting serious views publicly, the projected views are of people who are not expert and have not the necessary background of scientific knowledge and who panic the Cypriot society”, he said.
“EAC absorbs a large part of the additional cost and is suffering losses in order to serve the people of Cyprus because this is its role”, he added.
On the other hand, Chairman of the Regulatory Authority of Energy, Giorgos Siammas said that plans for the operation of the power generators from Greece by August 15 proceed normally. “Due to the increased demand, there will be a second power outage today, while things will be better as soon as the companies and the industries close for summer holidays”, he said.
Commenting on reports for hazardous substances in Vassiliko, EAC General Manager, Stelios Stylianou stressed that there is no risk since “in a power station like this such substances are handled based on international standards and specific directives. This material will be transferred along with other fuel to other plants.
Finally, he confirmed reports that a generator is in good condition and the authorities are trying to fix it so as to boost the power production.
