The Egyptian government has never questioned the Cyprus – Egypt agreement under the Treaty of the Law of the Sea, Foreign Minister, Ioannis Cassoulides stated on Thursday.
According to an official announcement, in his statements to journalists after the end of the first meeting of the new Council of Ministers at the Presidential Palace under the Chairmanship of the President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades, Mr. Cassoulides said "it was never raised an issue by the Egyptian government of questioning the agreement made by two members of the Treaty on the Law of the Sea, an agreement that was concluded and submitted to the UN. Egypt is a friendly country and the problem was created by a news story of the Egyptian news agency referring to an internal political debate in the Upper House (of Egypt)”.
“The political position of the specific MP is known, I will not interfere in internal political debates”, he said.
Mr. Cassoulides said that the Foreign Ministry will release an announcement on the issue.
Asked if it is possible under the international law a country to cancel a bilateral agreement, Mr. Cassoulides said "no, but Egypt never raised such an issue”. “Egypt's position is clear, its Minister came here, we had so many contacts, yesterday I was with the Ambassador of Egypt and she didn’t tell me anything on the issue”.
On the question whether this will affect the research in the Cypriot EEZ, Mr. Cassoulides replied negatively.
