The Ecologists Party urged the government on Monday to cancel the examination of the applications for the construction of 14 more golf courts in order to save the water resources. Speaking at a press conference, Ecologists’ Spokeswoman, Ioanna Panayiotou stated that it is paradox that the citizens are called to save water at the same time that millions of cubic meters of water will be spent for the construction of the golf courts and the villas around them. “Already, the three golf courts consume 1 million tone of water per annum each”, she noted.
Mrs. Panayiotou stressed that her party suggests the preparation of studies on the construction of a movable desalination unit and on the environmental impacts from the desalination factories.
The Ecologists also suggest the preparation of a general plan for the development of desalination factories in Cyprus.
