The Electricity Authority of Cyprus and the Transmission System Operator are trying hard to reduce power outages to once a day.
Speaking to StockWatch, TSO, Christos Christodoulides said that efforts focus on the reduction of the power outages to once a day, given that consumers will continue to save energy. “However, we cannot exclude a second outage in the power supply since we had an increased demand of 40MW in the morning”, he noted.
“We appeal once again for an energy saving because with the explosion at Mari we lost 53% of the power production ability. The help from the occupied north started with the offer of 20MW and has gradually increased to up to 100MW. Today, it stands at 60-100MW”, he said.
“If it wasn’t for the help from the occupied north, the power outages would have been longer and the condition more tragic”, he added.
According to Mr. Christodoulides, the power production ability at the current stage stands at 680MW.
Contacts for generators
In his statements to the CNA, EAC Chairman, Haris Thrasou said that in the next one-two months EAC will receive power generators that will cover Cyprus’s needs in electricity with an additional 250 – 300MW. “EAC will try to cover the problem not necessarily from one company only but from two or even three, depending on the offers”, he said.
“The Board of Directors of EAC is already evaluating more than 120 offers for the supply of power generators from Cyprus and overseas”, he added.
Mr. Thrasou said that the evaluation will continue today and probably tomorrow morning, while the BoD will meet tomorrow at 2.00 pm to approve the criteria for the negotiations that will follow.
Also, Cyprus will receive the power generators from Greece during weekend, which will arrive in 120 containers and will be transferred to Vassiliko. It is estimated that they will be connected in early August and will offer an additional 70MW to the system.
New appeal
In its announcement released today, EAC said that in cooperation with the TSO they are trying hard to secure that power outages will be once day and they will not exceed 2 hours and 30 minutes. It is noted that EAC and TSO will release a schedule in the next few days.
EAC emphasizes that if this increasing demand for energy continues, it will be forced to take additional measures that will cause additional power outages to the consumers.
