The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) together with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Tourism announced that EAC is proceeding with the construction of a third unit at Vasilico to ensure sufficient electricity production in view of Cyprus' increasing needs.
According to the announcement, the unit will have output of 120 MW by the use of crude oil through a desulphurisation system (FGD), the total cost of which is estimated at around CYP 80 million. The prospect of using natural gas for the production of electricity is an aspect which will be examined in due course and it is anticipated that an additional unit may be constructed with output of around 500 MW which will utilise natural gas, between 2006 and 2009.
