The management of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus has been alarmed by the technical failure in two units of Moni power plant and other technical failures in the power plant of the occupied areas. The blackout is estimated to hold up just before midnight.
The technical failure in Moni was caused last night, however, the problems and the impacts on the power supply are bigger than initially estimated.
According to our sources, EAC is holding an extraordinary meeting wit the participation of all Board members and Managers in order to examine the situation and find alternative ways to tackle the problem.
Technical failure in the occupied areas
According to Deputy Director for Operations and Personnel of the Transmission System Operator, Christos Toufexis, due to the technical failure in units 5 and 6 of the Moni power point and the additional reduction of production in the occupied areas (from 45MW that we expected, we received 25MW due to a failure of theirs), we will proceed with a second power outage to all groups today.
“Based on the current data, the blackouts will continue until 11.00 pm. If a production unit in Moni starts operating before 8.00 pm, blackouts are likely to minimize in the evening”.
In an announcement released at 3.30 pm, EAC noted that the blackouts will continue for a second period with a maximum duration of power cut of 2 hours.
According to the same announcement, due to the latest development, the publication of the rolling blackout schedule is postponed until the problem is solved.
