DISY Vice President, Averof Neophytou urged the government on Wednesday to submit a bill for the reduction of the consumer tax on heating oil to 1.2 cents per litre.

According to CNA, Mr. Neophytou said that the government’s positive decision to reduce the consumer tax on heating oil by 1.2 cents per litre has been incorporated in the budgets 2009 and “any Cypriot citizen that buys heating oil, must do so with an increased consumer tax of 12.47 per litre”.

“The Greek citizens buy their heating oil at 70 cents, while for the Cypriots it costs 94 cents. The government must reduce the consumer tax immediately, so that each household buys oil when this is deemed necessary, he stated.

Mr. Neophytou also noted that oil in the international markets currently costs 84 dollars per barrel and no one is sure about its price in January.

“The measures taken by the US and European governments might be fruitful and the confidence to the banking system might be restored, which means that oil prices will rise again”, Mr. Neophytou stressed.

Mr. Neophytou also welcomed the EU leaders’ decision against the crisis, which aims to boost the people’s confidence to the banking system and to facilitate the interbank transactions in view of the European Council.

“In the past few weeks, we hear that the system of free economy and market has collapsed and that interest must focus on the system and not the repercussions. We want to clarify that free economy without the proper supervision might lead to immunity. This doesn’t mean that we have to turn to other old and bankrupted systems. “We abide by the economic approach of free economy on condition of the strict supervisory control and the increased social responsibility and sensitivity”, he concluded.
