Right-wing party DISY recommended on Friday the introduction of a National Energy Committee, which will examine issues concerning the energy saving on a daily basis.
In his statements on the occasion of the World Day of Energy Saving tomorrow, DISY Vice President, Lefteris Christoforou said that Cyprus has lost time and ranks among the last EU member states on energy issues. “It is unacceptable. Cyprus is threatened with a fine by the EU because it fails to meet the minimum criteria in the sector of energy”, he noted.
“Further negligence on the issue will affect negatively consumers. We have to take measures today and not tomorrow and to determine the strategies that will face energy as an issue of national and social priority with specific strategies and policies”, he added.
Mr. Christoforou referred to the issues that the state must promote, such as the construction of public buildings based on energy, the energy saving by the state itself, the granting of energy-saving bulbs to all households, the exploitation of solar energy, the stronger encouragement and provision of incentives for the introduction of Renewable Energy Sources and the transfer of natural gas.
Mr. Christoforou also said that it is quite alarming the fact that the Energy Regulator admitted that electricity is so expensive due to the failure to introduce Renewable Sources of Energy, the failure to transfer the natural gas to Cyprus and other strategies and policies that the state should have done.
