Deliberations on Limassol – Piraeus connection

The connection between Limassol and Piraeus can be achieved only via a political decision and a state aid due to the high cost. Although certain MPs are in favour of the re-opening of the passengers’ transport between Limassol and Piraeus, once again it emerged that the cost for such an attempt is averting.
Chairman of the Transport Committee, Zacharias Koulias stressed the need to re-open the line for national and economic reasons.
Representative of the Cyprus Union of Ship Owners, Michalis Philippou said, however, that “from his own experience, the cost of the itineraries for a year stands at €5 million”.
General Manager of Shipping Chanber, Thomas Kazakos opposed to this view, stressing that the cost will be much higher now.
“The specific connection is costly and has become more expensive in the past few years due to the general ship expenses. The only solution is to use legal measures offered by the European Union via the European Commission’s guidelines for the state aids on sea transports”, he added.
On the other hand, MP Aristos Aristotelous said that the issue will be discussed at the meeting between Transport Minister, Nicos Nicolaides and his Greek counterpart in Greece.
