Rolandes: an attack in Iraq will harm tourism

The new estimates of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism on the reduction of tourism for 2002 have now reached 12-13%. The major problem is associated with the United Kingdom, as British arrivals were further reduced to 20% on August (9-10% on July).

These new estimates were presented by Mr. Nikos Rolandes, after the end of conference held at the Ministry. Mr. Rolandes stated that- according to the tourism data- the number of means of transportation was not adequate and travel organizers were unable to cover the needs of all those extra tourists that wanted to visit Cyprus.

Mr. Rolandes pointed out that this reduction in tourism will certainly “affect revenues and growth” and he added that the Cabinet will also be informed about the issue.

Then, Mr. Rolandes made it clear that a possible American attack in Iraq will affect Cyprus to great extent.

Howevere, he also mentioned that there is already an “action plan”in place, but , he avoided to expand in detail.

Finally, he appealed to all those related to hotel industry (Hotel Owners and staff) to have moderate demands so that Cyprus maintains its competitiveness in relation to other tourism destinations.
