“The damages in the Vassiliko power station are larger than expected due to the explosions at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base”, Chairman of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, Haris Thrasou stated.
Mr. Thrasou, who attended the meeting at Vassiliko in the presence of the Commerce Minister, the General Manager of EAC, the Chairman and the Board members of the Regulatory Authority of Energy, stated that the restorations will delay. Vassiliko is the biggest power station of Cyprus and produces around 53% of the electricity that EAC can produce.
According to Mr. Thrasou, the meeting decided a number of practical measures, which will be proposed by the Commerce Minister to the extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers.
At the same time, the meeting at EAC offices in the presence of Mr. Thrasou, RAE and the Transmission System Operation, is currently in progress. The meeting will determine the program of the distribution system for the proper distribution of electricity across Cyprus.
“Unfortunately, at first sight it seems that the damages are larger than expected”, he said after the meeting.
“The damages cannot be estimated since the station is closed for the people. It is dangerous, the roof and the walls have collapsed”, he added.
“Contractors, who have the necessary means, have been instructed to contribute to the removal of all rubble so that technicians can inspect the damages”, he stressed.
On the question whether the restoration will be long, Mr. Thrasou said that it seems it will be.
