Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and US Chevron Vice President Frank Cassulo reaffirmed their support to the development of the “Aphrodite” gas field located in the Cypriot exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

In written statement issued Friday, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said that President Christodoulides met yesterday in New York, with a delegation of the US major, which is the operator of “Aphrodite”, headed by the Chevron Vice President.

“The President of the Republic and the company’s Vice President reconfirmed their support to ‘Aphrodite’, a project which is considered of strategic importance for the energy plans of Cyprus, the wider reaction and the company itself as well,” Letymbiotis said.

The Spokesman added that “in the coming period under the road map that has been charted through specific actions and steps, the Ministry of Energy and the company will proceed with close coordination and collaboration for this strategic project.”

Christodoulides’ meeting with Chevron's senior official came after a joint statement issued by the Energy Ministry and Chevron, following meetings they held in Nicosia, that they will carry out discussions in the next four months “with a view to finding a consensual settlement which secures the development of ‘Aphrodite’ with no further delays.”

The gas field’s consortium on September 2 said it submitted a revised development plan providing for investments amounting to $4 billion.
