The “Digital Citizen” application, which has been developed based on the standards of Greece’s “Gov.gr Wallet”, is available from today, December 5, announced the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of the Republic of Cyprus and the Ministry of Digital Governance of Greece, noting that the two applications are expected to interoperate within the first quarter of 2025.

In a joint statement, the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of the Republic of Cyprus and the Ministry of Digital Governance of Greece said that “the cooperation between Cyprus and Greece in the field of digital transformation is deepening, as from today, December 5, the “Digital Citizen” application, which has been implemented according to the standards of the Greek “Gov.gr Wallet” is available on Google Play and App Store”.

The application, they add, was developed following a memorandum of understanding the two Ministries signed “with the aim of exchanging best practices and experience, as well as providing know-how for the development of applications and digital services to serve citizens.”

The “Digital Citizen” and the “Gov.gr Wallet” are expected to interoperate within the first quarter of 2025, it said. “This way, the digital documents of the two applications will be mutually recognised from one state to the other, significantly facilitating citizens in Cyprus and Greece in their identification, as well as in their transactions,” they said.

Dr Nicodemos Damianou, Cyprus’ Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, said that the launch of the “Digital Citizen” application, was “an important milestone” as regards the country’s path towards digital transformation.

Referring to the plans for the interoperation of the application with the corresponding Greek one, Damianou said that they expect that “it will have a great impact on the citizens of both countries.”

The Deputy Minister also said that cooperation between Cyprus and Greece continues. “We are expanding the cooperation to other areas, as we have agreed in the context of the recent Cyprus-Greece Intergovernmental Summit and we are moving together towards the digital era,” he said.

Greece’s Minister of Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergiou, said that the development of the “Digital Citizen”, which, he noted, was “the equivalent of our Gov.gr Wallet application in Cyprus, is the first tangible result of our cooperation in the field of digital transition.”

Papastergiou said that the multidimensional nature of digital transformation “requires the exchange of experiences and best practices”. “Our cooperation is a model in this field and shows the way on how we can handle such serious issues at the European level”, he said, adding that only in this way can states have the best possible result for their citizens.
