Cyprus is in emergency since early in the morning, after the blast at the Evangelos Florakis naval base in Mari, which might affect the power supply of the island for a long period of time.

Five firemen, four members of the National Guard and two sailors are alleged to be the victims of the blast at the Evangelos Florakis naval base, according to military sources cited by the Cyprus News Agency. They also talk about 15 injured in the hospitals of Larnaca, Nicosia and Limassol, which appeal for blood donation.

The President of the Republic is visiting the spot, where an extraordinary meeting with the Ministers will be held.

The scheduled meetings for the Cyprus issue and the economy at the Presidential Palace have been cancelled.

Defence Ministry Spokesman, Aliki Stylianou told the CyBC Radio at 8.43 am that “unfortunately there are victims the number of which is unconfirmed at the moment”.

Mrs. Stylianou said that there is no risk of new blasts.

“We are trying to handle the crisis”, Chief of the National Guard, Petrols Tsalikides told the CNA. Mr. Tsalikides is currently at the naval base.

“It is a big disaster. Two containers of explosives, which were confiscated from a ship two years ago, caught fire”, Mr. Tsalikides said.

The blast was caused at 6.00 am.

The Police have blocked the exit of the old Nicosia-Limassol Road that leads to Mari and do not allow the entrance to the Vassiliko workers.

Ambulances are the only vehicles to approach the spot.

According to the statements of residents cited by the CNA, few minutes before 6.00 am, a deafening sonic boom was heard and the sky was covered by a huge “mushroom of smoke”.

The island’s biggest electricity stations, Moni and Vassiliko, have been knocked out causing power cuts to Nicosia and Larnaca.

Fire Brigade Spokesman, Leonidas Leonidou said that the fire brigade uses all the power that it has to deal with this tragic event.

There are 23 fire trucks in the area. He also talked about a number of wildfires that have broken out near the Vassiliko station.
