One year after the liberalization of the air transports, Cypriots’ trips abroad have increased significantly. According to the relevant data released on Tuesday, Cypriots’ trips in January-May 2005 recorded an increase of 8% to 319 thousand against 295 thousand in the corresponding period of 2004.
In May, trips increased by 8.8% to 73 thousand against 67 thousand in the corresponding month of 2004. Although this increase was lower than that of April (+17.7%), the figures are very encouraging.
Air transports were liberalized after the island’s accession in the EU on May 1, 2004.
Greece is once again the most popular destination for Cypriots (41%), followed by the United Kingdom (15%) and Russia (5%). Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Egypt hardly absorbed 11% of the Cypriot travelers.
In May, 64% of them traveled for leisure and 26% for professional reasons. 55% of the travelers were women.
