Firefighting aircraft which arrived in Greece on Monday to help in firefighting efforts against the ongoing wildfires are expected to attempt operations during the day.
The mission consists of two aircraft with a crew of four and five support personnel, including two officials from the Forestry Department and three forest firefighters, said Giorgos Constantinou, spokesperson for the Department told CNA. The aircraft were sent to Greece through the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism.
He said the Cypriot mission will be updated by the authorities and is expected to operate during the day in accordance with the given instructions.
The Cypriot mission will be based in Alexandroupoli, but they will operate wherever the need arises, said Constantinou adding the mission will remain in Alexandroupoli for as long as it is needed by the Hellenic Republic.
He described the situation on the wildfire front as "very difficult” emphasizing that there are "a number of big and dangerous fronts."
