Cyprus President, Tassos Papadopoulos unveiled on Tuesday the 7year-strategic plan on tourism before 22 companies of the island’s tourist industry.
Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Papadopoulos stated that Cyprus must become a quality tourist destination, able to satisfy visitors and ensure a constant improvement on the quality of life for the locals. The strategic plan aims at increasing tourist expenditure, improving seasonability, increasing tourist arrivals and the duration of holidays and increasing repeated tourism.
The strategic plan is also seeking ways to increase revenues to £1.8 billion in 2010 from £1.1 billion in 2002 and £1.3 in 2001 in real terms and increase tourist arrivals to 3.5 million in 2010 from 2.4 million in 2002 and 2.7 million in 2000 and 2001.
Mr. Papadopoulos noted that the government is preparing a second plan in case of a settlement of the Cyprus issue and expressed his disagreement on the latest allegations that the Republic has been negatively affected by the partial lifting of the restricting measures in the movement to and from the occupied territories.
Responding on the question whether there will be a political compromise with regard to the high expenditure on tourism resulting from the strategic plan, the President replied that the technocratic authorities of the Republic have evaluated this point and explained that the private sector will participate to this investment as well.

As regards to the granting of a casino license in the Republic, Mr. Papadopoulos referred to the discordant views of the government members. “Certain people are in favour of the opening of a casino in Cyprus, some others are opposed to it. The arguments of both parties must be examined and evaluated thoroughly and this is a difficult task”, the President concluded.
