The recent discovery of large quantities of natural gas in the Cypriot EEZ raises excellent prospects and new data for cooperation, President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, who attended the Business Forum organized by the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Jordan and the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Amman, stated today.
In his welcome speech, the President addressing the businessmen from Cyprus and Jordan said “your presence here confirms our expectations for further strengthening trade and economic relations between the two countries”.
“Cyprus and Jordan are connected with traditional ties of friendship and cooperation. Besides, for Cyprus, Middle East has always been its immediate geographic field. A field that has high activity and continuously develops multilateral partnerships”, he said.
“However, in recent years it is ascertained that the level of trade and economic relations between Cyprus - Jordan remains stagnant and is at a lower level. The statistics of trade, including transactions in services and investments, have stalled. This is why we need to continue the search of areas with prospect of future cooperation”, he said.
Those areas are that of energy and investments, he added.
In relation to the energy sector, the President said that "the recent discovery of large quantities of natural gas in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus creates excellent prospects and new data for cooperation”.
"My country believes that the development of renewable energy sources such as solar energy is of great importance. Cyprus has considerable experience in this field and has developed expertise that could be the basis for cooperation”.
As for the field of investment, the President said that Cyprus has established itself as a reliable international business center, as well as an attractive destination of foreign capital inflow. The low tax ratio on business activities, the legal, banking and financial system as well as reduced bureaucracy in combination with the necessary infrastructure, strengthen more and more the attractiveness of the Cypriot market.
“The investment interest of Jordanian companies in Cyprus is confirmed by the total capital of investment of €77 million. At the same time, a significant number of companies from Jordan operate in Cyprus”.
“The successful cooperation of Cypriot and Jordanian businesses could be also applicable in the fields of education, tourism, communication and commerce”, he added.
Finally, the President ensured that he will continue to support and encourage every effort contributing to the further strengthening of relations. “There is a wide range of opportunities for collaboration”, he said.
On the other hand, Jordanian Prime Minister, Fayiz Tarawneh, who attended the forum, said that many can be done in the sectors of economy and trade between the two countries.
“There is political will and this was expressed in yesterday's meeting between King Abdullah B and President Christofias. Cyprus and Jordan have many similarities in the way they handle their business affairs”, he noted.
The Jordanian Prime Minister highlighted the role that Cyprus can play as Chair of the EU Council in the relations between Jordan and the EU.
“Jordan enjoys political stability which is an advantage in relation to the further promotion of economic and trade bilateral relations. The private sector both in Jordan and Cyprus is very productive”, he said.
In the sidelines of the forum, the Jordan Chamber of Commerce and Jordan Chamber of Industry signed an Agreement of Cooperation with the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, while the two stock exchanges signed a Memorandum of Understanding.
