CTO: Expansion of Cyprus-Malta cooperation

After his meeting with representatives of the Tourism Authority of Malta headed by Chairman Romwald Lungaro-Mifsud on Wednesday, CTO Chairman, Fotis Fotiou emphasized the need to expand the cooperation between Cyprus and Malta in the sector of tourism.

Similarly, Romwald Lungaro-Mifsud expressed his gratification for being in Cyprus and stressed his country’s will to have a closer cooperation with the CTO.

During the meeting, the two parties had talks on the introduction of joint attractive tourist packages in order to attract tourists from distant destinations such as China, India, Japan and other Middle East and Arabic Gulf countries.

They also reviewed the prospects of the Chinese market, which is expected to be the fourth market of outgoing tourism worldwide by 2010 according to the World Tourism Organization, the air connection of the two countries for the better servicing of tourists, the visas and the ways to tackle any problems that might arise.

The meeting was attended by representatives of air company EMIRATES, headed by its Deputy Chairman, Keith Longstaff. Mr. Longstaff said that the company has a satisfactory network for Cyprus since it connects the island with New Delhi, Shangai and Tokyo via Dubai.

He also noted that Dubai-Cyprus-Malta flights will become 5 from September 2006 and the company will support the efforts of the two organizations.

It is worth noting that all parties agreed to introduce a technical committee with representatives from the two organizations, the air company EMIRATES, the Tour Operators of the two countries in order to prepare an action plan for the exchange of know-how and tourist information.

They also discussed the cooperation of their offices abroad, the better promotion of the tourist packages and the printing of brochures, the participation in fairs and the organization of events and educational trips.

The next meeting of the technical committee will be held on March 20 in Malta.
