Cyprus lags behind in the value for money compared to other tourist destinations and it is an urgent need to enrich the island’s tourist product, a survey on the level of satisfaction of tourists that visit Cyprus revealed. The survey, which was published by the CTO and covers the period February – December 2006, was carried out via personal interviews of 4937 tourists at their departure from the Larnaca and Paphos airports: The survey aimed to:

1) Register the level of satisfaction of the tourists from their stay in Cyprus.

2) Prepare indices that will observe the development of satisfaction in the form of barometer.

3) Specify the factors that affect the level of satisfaction.

4) Track down the sectors that the island’s tourist product lags behind.

5) Evaluate the effectiveness of certain measures and policies.

Who is coming back to Cyprus?

The survey showed that cleanliness, transportation and infrastructure are problematic in Cyprus. Most visitors stated that it is possible to choose Cyprus for their holidays again; the Greeks, the British, the Irish and the Russians said that they will visit Cyprus again, while the French, the Germans and the Scandinavians were negative.

Stay

The survey also showed that the 3, 4 and 5-star hotels have improved significantly. In relation to 2005, tourists are more satisfied as far as cleanliness, service, appearance and value for money is concerned. Most tourists are satisfied with the hotel units of Protaras, Ayia Napa and Larnaca and have expressed their discontent for the 1 and 2-star hotels in Paphos and Polis Chrisohous.

Food

Tourists declared that they are more satisfied with the cleanliness and quality of food in the restaurants of Protaras, Paphos and Polis Chrisohous but they are dissatisfied with the restaurants of Larnaca and Nicosia.

Natural beauty

The tourists’ perception for Protaras and Polis Chrisohous has improved, while they are less satisfied with Paphos, Nicosia and Limassol.

Transportation

Tourists are more satisfied (compared to 2005) with the urban and tourist buses and the rented cars but they have expressed their discontent for the taxis. Specifically, they see an improvement in the itinerary network, the access to buses and the value for money for the rented cars but they are disappointed by the professionalism, service, itinerary and condition of the taxis.

The Germans, the Greeks and the British tourists are less satisfied with the condition of the Cypriot airports, while the French, the Irish and the tourists from the Gulf countries are less satisfied with the road network.

It is worth noting that last year – when the survey was carried out – the tourist revenues surged while arrivals dropped. Tourist revenues had put on 2.2% to £1.027,3 million compared to £1.005,7 million in 2005, while tourist arrivals fell by 2.8% to 2.4 million against 2.47 million in 2005.
