According to CYSTAT data released on Tuesday, the number of persons participating in cruises in January-September 2004 showed an increase of 18% to 82 thousand against 69 thousand in the corresponding period of 2003. 55% of the travelers were foreigners.
The start of the new Indifanda in September 2000 and the loss of the Israeli market, the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 and the war in Iraq have hit the sector. The recovery is partly attributable to the increased tourist arrivals (+2.9%) and the improvement in the domestic demand for cruises.
Despite the recovery in demand, Louis, the larger cruise operator, showed reduced profits in January-September 2004, mostly due to the reduced occupancy ratio of the cruises to Egypt and the increase in the price of fuel.
