A large number of companies are struggling hard this year for the twenty big and small projects of €130 million, claiming a part of the shrinking development expenditure that will be distributed in 2010. The list of the Public Works Department secured by StockWatch includes nine projects the procedures of which are mature and eleven more the tenders of which will be out in the next six months. For certain projects, the tenders are too many.
Projects under construction
According to the Public Works Department, the construction of the Presidency building in the Conference Center will start soon. The tender was awarded to Miltiades Neophytou Constructions and the contracts will be signed in the next few weeks.
Its cost is estimated at €20 million plus VAT and will be completed by December 2011, before Cyprus undertakes the EU rotating presidency.
The second big project, which is at the stage of evaluation of bids, is that of the Oncology Ward at the Limassol General Hospital. After StockWatch’s report last year that the project would be postponed due to the crisis, the reactions were strong and President Christofias intervened so that the procedures go on.
The project is expected to cost €20 million plus VAT and will be constructed with the BOT method.
The construction of the first phase of the Refugees building in Menogeia is also at the evaluation stage and its cost is expected to reach €9.5 million plus VAT.
The procedures for the Metrology Lab are in mature stages and its cost is estimated at €4 million plus VAT. The tenders were invited on November 17, 2009 and the deadline is until January 29.
Similarly, Ward 9 of the central prisons will cost €3 million and the tenders were invited on December 31, 2009.
The projects that are in mature stages include the building for the Meneou sea culture station of €1.8 million and the road in Paliometoho of €2 million. The tenders were invited on November 26.
The bidders for the Georkipou wave breakers of € 2million are still on hold.
In 10 days, the bidders will also know who will be the one to undertake the road to Polis Chrysohous station, which is expected to cost €2 million.
Projects “in the egg”
For 2010, the Public Works Department has been ordered to promote the tenders for eleven more projects.
Those projects include the second phase of the Refugees building in Menogeia (tenders will be invited in late August 2010), the cost of which is estimated at €17.5 million plus VAT.
Also, the second phase of the police headquarters in Paphos is still in early stages and the Public Works Department is optimistic that tenders will be out in late January and the project will be finalized before the end of the year since it will not take more than 6 months, unless it stumbles at the Bid Authority. Its cost is expected to reach €1.2 million plus VAT.
The tenders of the 2km - Linou-Skouriotisaa road of €1.1 million will be out in the next two months. The cost has been estimated at €1.1 million.
The procedures for the second part of the first phase of the road that connects the Limassol port with the Limassol-Paphos highway are in early stages. Its cost stands at €33 million plus VAT and the tenders will be invited in the first half of the year.
