The statements of the Green Party MP, Giorgos Perdikis for stored hazardous toxic, carcinogenic and explosive substances before the legal explosion in EAC’s power station have raised concerns.
Presenting the minutes of the meeting held on July 19 at the Larnaca District Administration, Mr. Perdikis said that those substances were stored before the explosion at the Vassiliko power plant.
According to the minutes, the warehouses seem to have hosted substances such as ammonium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, hydrazine, caustic soda and sodium hydroxide.
Mr. Perdikis noted that at the transition of the workshops to the station, the substances could not be tracked down because they were under the ruins.
He also talked about hydrazine bottles of 25 and 200 litres, which are under the ruins and are still missing.
“The minutes also refer to a crude leakage from the tanks and our party addressed to the Bioethics Committee in order to secure a permit and be able to take urine and blood samples from the area residents and the EAC employees”, he added.
He also claimed that in order to track down depleted uranium, there is a need to take urine and blood samples from the residents. “No samples have been taken so far, while residents are subject to pathological tests only”, he stressed.
Mr. Perdikis expressed his discontent for being reassured by the competent authorities during the joint session of the House Health and Environment Committees.
“Following the latest developments, a new session of the competent House Committees is necessary”, he concluded.
