A Professional Development Seminar organized by CIIM and Rotaract Berengaria Club

The Cyprus International Institute of Management (CIIM) in cooperation with the Rotaract Club of Limassol Berengaria Cosmopolitan have organized a one-day professional development seminar on Saturday, December 1st with the title “Working in an International Environment”. This seminar, which had strong participation and was pronounced a success, shed light and offered insights on the challenges faced by young professionals who work in multicultural environments.

The seminar took place at the CIIM campus in Limassol and the participants included members of the Rotaract Berengaria Club, CIIM students and alumni as well as guests from the general public.

The speaker line-up included three distinguished and ‘truly international’ speakers who now live and work in Cyprus: Dr. Olga Kvasova from Russia, lecturer in Marketing, Mr. Graeme Sherman from the United Kingdom, Chief Operating Officer of a telecommunications company, and Mr. Mike McCormac from Ireland, a Sales and Marketing Consultant.

Dr. Olga Kvasova, touched upon the various elements and the importance of cultural issues in International Marketing. She also explained the implications in marketing with the cultural differences from country to country and gave some humorous and enlightening examples of blunders in cross-cultural advertising.

Graeme Sherman shared his personal experiences and challenges that he experienced working in countries in the Middle East, Europe and Africa, such as Ankara, Cairo, Abu Dhabi and now for the last two years Limassol!

Last but not least, Mike McCormac explained to the audience the art of negotiation from an international perspective. He discussed the basics of a negotiating framework and the pitfalls and opportunities when negotiations take place around a table with international participants.

A panel discussion followed the three presentations and the participants had a chance to challenge the three speakers with questions and real-life dilemmas that the audience themselves had faced. The three panellists provided some insightful replies and closed with their inspirational words of advice to the young and eager audience who attended.
