In his address to the people of Cyprus on Thursday, President Christofias sent a message of unity so as to deal with the challenges after the disastrous explosion at Mari.

He said that the laws and institutions must be supported and not undermined by extremist groups. “The Presidential Palace cannot be a target”, he said.

Mr. Christofias pledged to investigate fully the conditions that led to the accident and all those who are responsible will be liable to the state.

“This is necessary in order to restore the confidence of the citizens in the state”, he added.

The President cited the challenges that Cyprus faces – apart from the economic – after the explosion and made a special mention to the Cyprus issue and the EU rotating presidency.
