Not much came out today for the promising Chinese investment at the old Larnaca airport.
After the meeting at the Communications Ministry in the presence of representatives of the Chinese Far Eastern Phoenix, Hermes Airport and the Attorney General, Communications Minister, Efthimios Flourentzou stated that the government gave the context in which the next steps will be made for further examining and promoting the proposal with the prospect of implementing it via legal procedures.
On comments that the final decision was to be taken today, Mr. Flourentzou said that they examined the economic and legal framework and decisions will be taken from now and on.
“We have decided on our next steps but it will depend on the results of the Chinese examination based on the Attorney General’s findings”, he said.
Though avoided answering whether the investment stumbles at legal problems, he said that all legal procedures will be followed so that it is legally safe.
Asked if there are legal problems in extending the lease period of land to 50 years from 19, he said that the legal science and opinions are based on data that could lead to a wrong opinion if they are not completed.
Mr. Flourentzou ensured that the procedure will lead to safe decisions.
On the questions whether investment will collapse, he said that they are working towards implementing the investment within the legal frameworks.
The investment provides for the construction of a wholesale trade centre at the old Larnaca airport “uniting” China to Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
