Chinese company CNOOK proposed to the Cypriot government the construction of a natural gas liquefaction terminal, Commerce Minister, Neoclis Silikiotis stated from Athens today.
According to Mr. Silikiotis, the multilateral cooperation does not exclude states. “The construction of a terminal takes 8 years”, he stressed.
In his statements to Cypriot journalists in Athens covering the Economist conference on energy, Mr. Silikiotis said that Cyprus has accepted a proposal for a pipeline, not only from Delek but from other companies as well.
“Our pursuit is to cooperate will all countries of the region, Greece and Cyprus as EU members states may offer help in security issues and the unhindered supply of energy in Europe. There are many ways to secure cooperation with Greece”, he noted.
“Our primary goal is to launch a structured dialogue with Noble for the natural gas supply for our own needs, which includes talks on the pipeline from plot 12”, he said.
“Inevitably, we have to deal with the infrastructure too. We have introduced a special group with the participation of experts to examine the issue”, he said.
“Our aim is to reduce dependence on external sources for row material related to energy”, Mr. Silikiotis added.
“A third goal for Cyprus is the energy production with cheaper fuel. We are already in consultations with Noble for the exploitation of deposit 12 for fuel and cheaper energy in Cyprus”, he said.
Responding to a question of the Turkish Ambassador, Mr. Silikiotis said that Cyprus acts in the spirit of international law and maritime law. Reunification due to energy stocks is to the benefit of the Turkish Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots can secure their rights themselves”, he stressed.
“Noble’s results were granted to the Energy Service and experts for evaluation”, he added.
“We are already in talks for the establishment of a state Hydrocarbon company, which will have a role in all aspects (terminal, trade etc). We have a draft from experts and we seek advice from French company bacip”, he said.
On the question about the revenues form natural gas, the Minister answered that it is too early. “CERA did a great job. The development and revenues from the natural gas exploitation is a significant parameter”, he noted.
On the question whether natural gas will be in the agenda of the Presidency, he said that Europe must finance energy infrastructures to secure the unhindered energy supply in Europe.
