According to preliminary results of the statistical service concerning the census of population as at 1 October 2001, the population of Cyprus has risen to 686.000 persons, an increase of 11.5% over the last nine years, compared with 615.000 persons according to the last census of 1992.
The census enumerated both Cypriots and non-Cypriots who live or intend to live in Cyprus for more than a year. It therefore intended to enumerate in addition to the foreigners permanently residing in Cyprus and all other non-Cypriots (students, workers etc.) whose duration of stay in Cyprus exceeds or will exceed one year.
In particular, the population of Nicosia as at 1 October 2001 is 273.000 showing an increase of 9.6%, for the region of Famagusta population rose by 15.6% to 37.000, the population of the Larnaca region rose by 10.7% to 114.000, with population in Limassol rising by 11.3% to 197.000. The Paphos region showed the highest increase of 20.4% to 65.000.
