The financing of local authorities who support black holes and dispose the money of the tax payers ineffectively must end, Savvas Iliofotou, Secretary of EDEK Thematic Local Administration said.

Speaking to a press conference, Mr. Iliofotou said that “due to the small size of our country, the creation of only six municipalities nationwide must be ventured, abandoning the effort that is already underway (for creating more Municipalities than today), which if completed will lead to more fragmentation than that of the local government, exacerbating existing problems”.

“Taking into account the seriousness of the situation in local government and to avoid conflicts which can be fired from the ongoing pre-election campaign, we suggest the Interior Minister, Eleni Mavrou, to set up of a crisis team under her chairmanship”.

“The team will provide technocratic support with the participation of representatives of the parliamentary parties and the Associations of Municipalities and Communities because without collective effort and responsibility worse days are to come”.

According to Mr. Iliofotou, the crisis in the Municipalities and Communities cannot be addressed with spasmodic actions and a climate of dispute between the central government and the local authorities.

“Citizens demand by the government and the local authorities a quick and quality service with the lowest possible cost”, he concluded.
